Two-year international research and development project FINESCE kicks off/ commences work on Future Internet Smart Utility Services

The FINESCE consortium made up of 20 partners from 12 European countries commenced its proceedings to organise and run user trials in 7 European countries in order to develop an open source IT-infrastructure. This structure will be used for the development and offering of new and inexpensive app-based solutions in all fields of the Future Internet as well as for the launch of a European innovation community for smart energy applications.

Funded by the European Commission's Future Internet Public-Private Partnership Programme (FI-PPP), the use case project FINESCE will prove the practical applicability of Future Internet technologies and test the Generic Enablers of the FI-PPP project FI-WARE. FI-PPPs main goal is to advance a shared vision for harmonised European-scale technology platforms and their implementation, as well as the integration and harmonisation of the relevant policy, legal and regulatory frameworks.

FI-WARE  delivers an open architecture and a reference implementation of a novel service infrastructure that FINESCE will extend to tackle the special challenges within the energy sector.

Project coordinator Dr. Fiona Williams, Ericsson GmbH, elaborates: In FINESCE, we have the opportunity to build real working trials of the concepts and solutions to balance the energy demand and the generation in the smart grid, . [a1]

FINESCE addresses efficient energy usage in residential and industrial buildings, develops a new prosumer energy marketplace, builds a cross-border private virtual power plant and employs electric vehicles as a component of demand response systems. Thereby, FINESCE solutions based on Future Internet ICT enable energy providers to move from reactive to pro-active energy network management and to facilitate the balancing of intermittent solar and wind energy generation and energy demand.

The trials will show utilities at what extent ICT can improve their options for balancing the intermittent energy generation and the energy demand in nearly real-time., says technical manager Prof Dr. Antonello Monti, RWTH Aachen University.

FINESCE will run Innovation Events in 5 countries in order to build up an active community for smart energy applications developed by innovative SMEs. Open Calls for proposals will provide funding for SMEs and the definition of the FINESCE Open API as an interface to the field trials will prepare SMEs for the exploitation of the emerging business opportunities in energy. In fact, the project lays the foundation for the creation of jobs, social impact and economic growth.

FINESCE builds on and extends the results of the FI-PPP FINSENY project to realise sustainable real time smart energy services. The consortium includes leading energy and ICT operators, manufacturers and service providers as well as research organisations and SMEs from all over Europe. Together, they contribute directly to strongly focused trials and business innovation. The project features a scale and scope ensuring the FINESCE results will drive the FI-WARE and Future Internet success and long-term exploitation internationally.
